The problem nobody owned
Members of a small village savings group knew how much money they contributed each week, but disagreements sometimes arose because collections and withdrawals were recorded inconsistently.
What people actually did
One member who kept records for a local shop drew a simple three-column ledger in an exercise book: money in, money out, and balance. During the next meeting, she showed the group how to record every transaction before money changed hands.
What changed
The group adopted the ledger for its weekly meetings. At the end of the month, members could account for the full balance without reconstructing transactions from memory.
